About Famous grouse
The Famous Grouse whiskey was first produced in 1896 by Matthew Gloag & Son. Matthew Gloag was a wine merchant and a grocer in Perth Scotland. Matthew was an astute whiskey vendor, and earlier in 1842, his business acumen landed him a supply invitation for the King’s royal banquets. It is Matthew’s son William who actually started producing blended whiskeys in 1875, and later, Matthew Gloag started managing the distillery and branded the whiskey Grouse in 1896.
Ownership
Matthew Gloag and sons registered the distillery as Matthew Gload & Sons a limited company in 1905, subsequently renaming it “The Grouse” into “The Famous Grouse.” Later in 1970, after the demise of Chairman Matthew Fredrick Gloag, Highland Distillers acquired the brand, and the distillery relocated from Atholl Street to Kinnoull Street. The current brand owners are the Glenturrent. The Famous Grouse is among the best-selling brands in Scotland since 1980.
Distillery Capacity and Awards
With an annual production capacity 2 million cases, The Famous Grouse is exported worldwide. The standard whiskey blend has a maturity of 6 months where it sits in Oak casks. Alcohol content averages 40% ABV. The whiskey was awarded the Royal Warrant in 1984. This award was given to those appointed to supply goods and services to the King’s royal courtyard. The whiskey has a long-standing relationship with the National Rugby Union team, having sponsored the event severally (1990-2007) and was awarded “The official Spirit of Scottish Rugby,” a title it held 3 years in a row beginning 2013. In 2014 the whiskey scooped “Official Commonwealth Games Whiskey 2014,” an event held in Glasgow.
Products and variants
Many products bear the brand; The Black Grouse is a unique brand released for the Swedish market. The Snow grouse meant to be served chilled was released in 2008, and the naked grouse is the premium brand released in 2011.
Taste profile
The Famous Grouse has a light, crisp nose of toffee apples and hints of biscuit barley and dried flowers; the palate consists of creamy malt with a biscuit-laden core with a hint of spice and a whisper of smoke with a slightly sweet malty finish. Its biscuit maltiness has earned it an outstanding reputation in Scotland.
